aww snap
One of my students has THE flu. Luckily he didn’t come to class this week, so we’re assuming he didn’t spread it.  Nevertheless, that class is cancelled for a week and I’m just supposed to tell my boss if I have even the slightest fever or anything.  It is by far my least favorite class, too, because the kids never talk and it’s super boring.  So.. I’m not...

coffee prince
Coffee Prince is a well-known Korean drama that aired a couple years ago.  I watched it last winter and loved it, and Sakura and I had been planning on going to the actual café in Hongdae for months now.  We finally went on Sunday.  It’s really not that great—it’s overpriced and everyone pretty much goes just to take pictures, plus it’s in an area filled with many cuter...

Kind of dark, sorry. EVERY time I’ve gone to Tin Pan in the last year, I’ve seen these guys.  They always go out together, never talk to girls, and only dance with each other.  Lots of dancing.  Grinding on each other, making a dance train.. everything.  This was from last weekend.  No one else was even dancing because the song was stupid, but they never stop.  I love them.

The owner of a bar we always go to in Itaewon.  He’s a weirdo. Yeah, look at these two thugs eating ramyeon under their little yellow umbrella. Tom.

compton, korea
After a five minute break in between my later classes today, I walked into the room and was greeted by 10 fifth and sixth-graders anxiously trying to tell me something. “TEACHER!!!  Teacher!!!  Oh my god!” “What?!  What??” A boy, Luke, started to tell me what happened.  ”David and Kent fighting.  David [made hard breathing sounds] then hit Kent with chair.  Kent...

so true
I handed Good Man a sample invitation. “What about this font? I like it, the hat man is happy looking.” Good Man started at me. “The Hat Man?” “Yeah, look at the ㅎ, it looks nice.” When I was learning the alphabet, Scott told me that the ㅎ is the Hat Man who makes an H sound. He does look spiffy in his hat. Good Man twirled his fingers around his ears....

kids
These two boys in my Kindergarten class get into the SAME argument everyday. In Korean. One of them, good ol' Ben, almost certainly has an untreated/unrecognized mental problem and the other one is more or less brain-dead.
Ben: 동생이 있어 없어? [Basically, "Do you have siblings?"]
Sunny: 없어. ["No."]
Ben: Ohh, 있다!!! ["Ohh, you do!!!"]
Sunny [yelling]: 없어!!!
Ben [laughing]: 있다!!!
Every. Day. You would think one of them would give up, but no. Now they have new seats and Ben will probably start happily provoking someone else.
I mean, I'm happy that they aren't saying actual mean things to each other because I've heard plenty of stories about genuinely awful children. But why you gotta get so riled up over non-existent brothers? (Or my kids' other favorite topic of argument--who gets the red crayon next!) I'm happy I'm not a 5-year-old.

september 22
I saw a sign on the subway in Korean and all I gathered was something about cars on September 22.  Thanks to About Seoul’s twitter, I figured out that it’s no car day in certain areas of Seoul and public transportation will be free.  Sweet!  I read elsewhere the areas will be Jongno and Taehaeranno in Gangnam—which is a super busy, huge street and I can’t imagine it ever...

WatchWatch
Seoul came up with a new advertising campaign, and on their website they have four different videos for their different target audiences.  Despite the fact that I hate awkward English voices like these that sound so friendly they verge on creepy, I think they actually did a good job picking their target markets and appealing to them.  I’ve read a lot about how Korea sucks at marketing...

dear dos tacos,
Why don’t you deliver? Just one vegetable burrito.  That’s all I want.  Please? I’m starving and since I slept from 7pm-3:30am last night, I am exhausted now and can’t be bothered to get up.  But I guess I’m going to have to since my dream of a Dos Tacos delivery won’t be coming true.  :(

oh, see, koreans really CAN get swine flu!
Kim Hyun Joong from Boys Over Flowers caught “the flu”.  My students told me yesterday, and I guess it’s true.  The kids also went on to tell me all the people they knew in real life or friends of friends who had caught it, yet I don’t know any… Clearly, Korea, it is a dirty foreigner disease.  Pshh.

Quotes and reblogs were showing up weird on my blog, and I just fixed it so that it’s much easier to read and understand.  (For reblogs: the gray part is what someone else said and I reposted here, then my comments are below.  If you were confused like my father was, heh.)

Americans probably won't care, but geeeeez.
source. “On the official 2PM fancafe, leader Jaebeom announced that he will be officially quitting 2PM. JYPE has just confirmed this is true. This decision was made after his recent Myspace controversy was blown out of hand. Jaebeom will be leaving Korea today at 6:30pm KST.” So because of some uppity Koreans, this poor guy’s career is over.  There was also a petition made in support...

bigbangandkpop: It will not be easy for 2PM member JaeBum, who has been criticised for his offending messages written on his MySpace page, to get out of the public eye and criticisms. With that, JYP Entertainment has gone with the situation, and had decided accordingly not to have JaeBum appear in the media’s eye for the time being. He will be put on a self-discipline period for the time...

pearl class
My Kindergarten class had to draw pictures of their family members.  They were all so cute, and I had brought them home to remind myself to go in early to hang them up.  I like them so much that I think I might just keep them and not display them.  I really love kids’ artwork. Brandon, the happiest kid in the world, was cracking up when he was drawing this. I liked Chad’s...
