Yayayaya!  I’ll be at City Hall later for the Korea game, then in Hongdae for Shake, then somewhere else at 3:30am to watch the US vs. England game (with my favorite English boy).  All I wanna do for the next month is drink Cass, watch soccer, and witness the inevitable domination of my bracket over Jason’s.  Sucka.

For those who missed her performance or wants to watch it again.

Oop this isn’t it.  It’s REALLY hard to find online for some reason.  I could only find it on SBS’s website, and NBC’s, which are only available for viewers in Korea and the States, respectively.  My SBS link seems to have died already, though.  (Nevermind, you just have to download a hundred things because Korean websites are designed as if it were still 2001.  Something I will never understand.)

Nevertheless, this video is still amazing.  I love her.

Kim Yuna!  She beat her former world record by 18 POINTS!  Insane.  Korea pretty much shut down while she was skating today.

hiddentreasures: eff-this: Walking to work this morning I could see everyone on their cell phones streaming the Olympics LIVE waiting for Kim Yu-na come skate.  She finally come on and everyone at school stopped what they were doing to watch her skate.  It was sorta moving to see how everyone feels about her, Koreans have so much pride in general and it was humbling to see their faces as they watched her. There was silence as we waited for her scores and they jumping and cheering once they came out!   Kim Yu-na took first place in the short program of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics!!  This Polly-pocket sized 20 year old rocked Korea’s world today, setting a world record of 78.50 points which is 4.72 points more than Mao Asada of Japan, her arch rival!! Kim Yuna, fighting! I was reading this article the other day about her…and the immense pressure that she’s under to succeed. Can you imagine having an entire nation that will love you one second and completely turn their backs on you the next…your own country, man…anyways, she like got second place in a competition once and got tons of text messages after the results came out and not a single one of them said ‘congratulations.’ But she’s super awesome and sets world records and shit so I hope she gets the gold.  Yeah, I really want her to win.  Mostly because I would feel horrible for her if she didn’t.  Koreans are brutal!

olympics

I went to Kimbap Nara to eat some cheese donkkaseu (forgot they cover it in the sauce, gross!) and the Olympics were on.  Specifically, men’s short track speed skating.  If Koreans are anything, they are proud and nationalistic, so when the Koreans did well in the first semi-final, everyone in the restaurant was pretty pumped.  Besides me, who was quietly cursing that JR Celski disqualified. 

Then in the second semi-final, Apolo Ohno barely took first and the Korean got third, meaning he didn’t qualify for the finals.  Everyone was fuming.  Turns out, Koreans hate Apolo Ohno because he’s half-Japanese he got gold over a Korean in 2002.  That’s right.  2002.  You never want to piss off the Koreans because they hold mad grudges.

Let’s talk about the Olympics. I anxiously counted down the minutes to the opening ceremony because the Beijing one was so awesome, only to be incredibly confused and disappointed.  Why is that kid flying?  Why are those punk people with fake tattoos doing Irish dances?  What does any of this have to do with the Olympics? I had also jokingly guessed that Wayne Gretzky would be lighting the big torch since I was unable to think of any other famous Canadian celebrities.. and then he really did.  Aww, Canada. THEN men’s speed skating?!  I always want Korea to do well, but I was secretly happy when two of them wiped out and the two hot American guys got medals instead.  Yeah!  Watching NBC is all I’ll be doing for my last week here.

I used to like the Super Bowl because, as an ad major, it meant we would spend the next day watching and talking about the ads in all of my classes.  (Although it’s not as if we were doing hard work on any other day of class.)  Otherwise, football is the worst sport ever, and I care much more about having an excuse to eat a bunch of junk food than I ever will about any NFL team.  I’m also too weirdly obsessed with pop culture to miss out on a night of potential wardrobe-malfunctions.

That being said, the game tonight was actually really good.  I decided to cheer for the Saints, only because I actually knew who two of the players were (Pierre Thomas played for Illinois and Reggie Bush is dating Kim Kardashian).  Whatever.  Ended up being a good choice.

I also liked a lot of the ads, more than I had the past few years.  Particularly, the Google one above, Dove for men, the Audi Green Police, and this Coke one.  Yeeeah, advertising!
