I have a big bone to pick with whomever decided the Seoul public transportation hours. Subway closing down at 12am on weekends and holidays? In a city where there are 24-hour coffee shops and clothing stores, and where it’s not uncommon for business-people to work super late hours? Really? I DID find out that the buses run later than the subway, though, which is helpful.. but still. I’ve spent $50 in the past three nights getting home from Hongdae or Sinchon. Ugh. White Whine, I know.
Side notes: there are an obscene amount of people from Illinois here now—which is awesome, and the number will only increase when Patrick and Jen come in the fall :). And the Lovely Bones is a really terrible movie.
There was an earthquake last night. I have now felt three of them in my life, and all of them have been in Illinois, which is a very unlikely place for earthquaking. Weird.

Bday flowers from my dad, aww.

Hangge Uppe in Chicago. So trashy/fun.

My sister is weird.

I’m happy that even though I had been gone for over a year, it was easy to maintain all my good friendships. I’ve seen so many of my friends since I’ve been home, it’s awesome.
You know when you grow up speaking a certain language or celebrating a certain holiday, and you think that everyone in the world lives the same way you do? Until you go to grade school (or college, even) and find out you were wrong?
For me, it was the Gondola sandwich. These are a staple to any Bloomington-Normal child’s diet, but are mysteriously absent from anywhere outside of central Illinois. There is something very specific about an Avanti’s or La Gondola sandwich that is much different from any average sub sandwich, and I am pretty sure you can’t find it anywhere but here. That’s not to say they are spectacular by any means, and most people who haven’t been eating them their whole lives probably think they are kind of gross or bland.
Anyway, the Gondola will always hold a special place in my heart. Much more so than Blo-No’s other claims to fame, such as Beer Nuts, State Farm, and David Davis. (Who is that? Exactly.)
Let me tell you, my 24th is going to be craaazay. I plan on waking up, eating some Krispy Kremes, meeting my mom for lunch, watching Queer as Folk with frequent interruptions because I can only find it on Megavideo, then eating chicken and grilled asparagus for dinner. So basically my entire birthday will be spent eating and watching gay boys on TV. Yeeeah!
I went to Champaign this weekend to stay with my sister and see other friends (like PAIGE! in the picture). We spent some quality time hanging out on “JSM print” couches, doing High Life power hours, being led to a party in Urbana, and hiding underage girls Anne-Frank style in the bathroom of Clybourne while undercover cops dragged people into their police van.
And wow, Cly’s is legit now. Like, they have lights on. This is a big step-up from the perpetually damp and disgusting dump where I spent most of my sophomore year, and once saw a guy cut his foot on the floor and bleed profusely until he left and someone sort of mopped it up. I actually didn’t feel like a scumbag being there this time.
It was really weird to be back, though. I knew a lot more people than I thought I would at the party in Urbana, and even ran into old friends at Cly’s. It was definitely fun to go back, and I want to again before I leave for Korea, but I am very glad to have moved on and to live somewhere else now.
