For anyone who may be going to KL (paging Gwangju), you should check out the Hop On, Hop Off bus.  We got really lazy due to the extreme heat, and bought cheap passes to use this all day.  There are over 20 stops around the city, with a bus coming every 30 minutes, so you can get on and off whenever you want.  There is also a little audio explanation of each place if you are interested, but we spent most of the time sleeping.. ha.  And most importantly, the buses are air conditioned.

KL

Kuala Lumpur was a pretty good time.  It was possibly the hottest place I’ve ever been in my life, but the food is beyond delicious and everything was hella cheap.  I would love to see more of Malaysia.

The Petronas Twin Towers.  I’ve never been so amazed by buildings.

The Kellers.  There were a ton of people trying to get themselves perfectly photographed in between the towers.  Nerds.

KL has got to be one of the most diverse cities in Asia, which is partly what made me like it so much.  Our first meal was Indian food.

The trains were so tiny compared to the ones in Seoul.

Petaling Street, which is a shopping area in Chinatown.

The architecture is way more interesting than Seoul’s.

Crazy fruits.

Chicken and pork with chicken rice in Chinatown = about $2.  So so so good.

The National Palace.

Petronas Towers and the KL Tower.

We went to the Lake Gardens and almost got attacked by wild monkeys.  Joy got a video of one jumping at her, with its tiny sharp teeth gleaming, and then her running away screaming while it chased her.  These monkeys were scary.

A mosque (Malaysia is a Muslim country).

Bags of coconut juice = about $0.30

No kissing!!!

Mouse deer—the smallest hoofed animals—are a main attraction at the Lake Gardens.

Regular deer are jammed into a tiny area where you can buy bread to feed them.  Sad and gross.

Getting robed up to go inside the National Mosque.

We went back up near the Twin Towers to walk around.  It’s a really expensive shopping area, and seems to be where a ton of rich Middle Easterners come on vacation.  Most of the food here was Middle Eastern, and there were so many women in burkas that it was almost as if we were in Saudi Arabia.

Inside one of the many huge malls.

The average shoppers in this area.  I honestly felt really uncomfortable around the women who were completely covered.  Saudi Arabia’s take on Islam bothers me a lot.

In our hostel, among many other places, durians (a super stinky fruit) are not allowed.  I wanted to try one, but never got the chance.  We did smell them at one point, and they do smell pretty rank.

8 days in southeast asia:

I only spent 400 USD while living and eating like a queen.  Compare that to roughly the same amount for 3.5 days in Japan, where we stayed in crappy hostels and had to seek out cheap food.

I took 461 pictures!

I probably gained a couple pounds stuffing my face with delicious Chinese, Singaporean, and Indonesian food.  The Western food in Bali was also super cheap, so we took advantage of that and ate a couple steaks and burgers since they are so expensive in Seoul.

I had an amazing time and can’t think about facing reality and the start of intensive classes tomorrow.  Pictures will come…
